STOP Bill 79! - Bill banning Pit Bull & American Staffishire ownership introduced to senate

STOP Bill 79!

A bill banning Pit Bull & American Staffishire ownership was introduced to senate yesterday. This bill would make it illegal to own this breed in Hawaii. Opponents to the bill are organizing a rally at Ala Moana Beach Park on Sunday, February 8 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Media will be invited to the event and they ask that all attendees be there by 12:30 pm. No dogs will be allowed at the rally.

While I'm an owner of a labrador retriever - no dog deserves to be banned, and no owner should be forced to give up their dog. folks who own pits and rotts (and not just pure breeds - but parts as well!) are already penalized on their homeowner's insurance because of the bad rap these dogs have gotten. Love a dog, any dog and treat them with kindness and respect and they're very unlikely to turn on humans. My in-laws had a pit for 10 years ... he was eveyone's best friend ...

I've been bitten by a dog, so has my mother - neither were pitts or rotts ... should we ban beagles and collies too?

Crazy introduction to the leg ... this is a plea to our law makers ... please spend your time and our tax payer dollars on bills that truly matter.

Aggressive dogs are a product of poor ownership and training.

Any dog of any size or breed can be vicious if they are not properly socialized, exercised and trained. Responsible ownership is the key to preventing vicious attacks and I am disappointed that Senator Hanabusa introduced this bill without considering its effects on the local pet community.

There are more important issues at hand for our state: our fragile economy, high unemployment, and shoddy roads to name a few. Here’s hoping that this bill gets tossed into the doggy poo pile.

This is ridiculous. It's more the humans fault when dogs become aggressive and dominate. The dogs have to be properly trained and corrected, and when that happens you have a balanced dog! If you can't handle it, have a trainer work with you, or give it to someone who can properly work with the dog. They should be banning bad dog ownership of humans; the ones that push these breeds to be more aggressive and dominate- they shouldn't be banning dogs or their breed. If they are for the best interest of the people, they should be thinking of different alternatives. It'd be better for the state to require all pit bull and american staffishire owners to register their dog with the state, and get a behavioral test-with checkups like twice a year, at least. I'm sure the owners would be more than happy to cooperate considering the alternatives. This way, they can weed out the owners who can't control and handle their dogs. Then the state could do what's best for the people, instead of penalizing GOOD owners and GOOD dogs. This is VERY dissapointing as well as embarassing that our state is even considering this.

I personally dont think any dog should be banned. It does depend on the way it was raised right? Come on now, dont we use that excuse on all these thieves and drug addicts too? Those people that want to ban pit bulls are the same people running our state and making laws here. Wonder why our state is in such a mess....do we get to ban them too? What THEY dont seem to understand is that if they do ban these pit bulls, what happens to all these pets that are now considered family members? Do we just get rid of our family members because someone said so? Think about it people....youre opening up a whole can of worms. Sorry to all those who did get bit or attacked, BUT... just like any other animal, MOST needs to be provoked but there are some of them who were taught to be that way because their owners thought it was cool to have their dog so aggresive. My point? Don't let all suffer for the few.

I had to say, Thank you Les. For bringing this to the network. When my daughter told me about it Sunday, she was worried it wouldn't receive public attention enough for people to respond in time. That's when I thought to pass it on to you. I knew you would know what to say. She has 3 pits of her own and they are good dogs. Friendly to everyone that visits her. She will be going to the rally on that weekend to add support. Thanks so much again

It is not the dogs that have the problem, it is the owners that cause these problems. If any ban should be passed then it should be against certain types of owners. I have bully breeds and they are just big love bugs. Don't condemn the dogs because their owners are irresponsible. It is humans that ruin animals not the other way around, doesn't matter if they are bully breeds or little dogs.
Spend your time on more important issues, like fixing the roads! Senator Hanabusa needs a priority adjustment.

I'm a proud owner of 2 american staffordshire terriers. They are the most loving, loyal dogs i've owned. They are so sweet and cuddly. I love my dogs and would do anything to keep them! They have never bitten anyone, hurt anyone or even rough played with anyone. They are very respectful, well behaved dogs. Everyone loves them!

Bad behavior reflects the actions of bad owners.
