I found Rex in an ad in the local newspaper- he was under the Give Away heading. He's a purebred Miniature Schnauzer who was born in Armstrong, Iowa, in March of 2005. The ad appeared in an October 2005 issue of the local newspaper in the Southern Minnesota town I called home so I called right away. Whether it was a ploy to get people interested or just an honest mistake I was told, once I arrived to look at him, that the ad was an error and he was actually $150.00. Well, he and I looked at each other then he left for the livingroom. I followed him. He sat on the couch. I apologized for what I was about to do and I lay on the floor. He looked down at me and I looked up at him- it was love at first sight. His old owner was not going to let me leave without him so home he came with me. He was very well-mannered sitiing in the back seat of the car directly behind the driver (me). He sat quietly the entire ride home. The rest is history living with me and my two Bichons. Rex is the greatest, didn't pull on leash, very obedient, etc. Then came the decision to move to Hawaii. Tough decision to end a chapter of your life to start a new one. I gave up MiMi and Willie (the Bichons) but couldn't quite say good bye to Rex. I had to plead (but eventually won) with my son to let me bring Rex with me. Rex is so attentive and always by my side giving me a sense of peace and confidence as well. His ride from Minnesota to Hawaii in the dead of winter (Dec) in 2006 was a cold and lonely one since he had to ride in the cargo area. Rex didn't mind though- his little stub of a tail wagged just as fast as any other day he sees me.
Rex and I lived with my 2 sons (then eventually one son left and a future bride moved in) and a Red-nosed Pit and a Boxer/Lab cross for 2 1/2 years. We now share a 3-bedroom apartment in Kailua. Rex comes to work with me (I am very fortunate) and has become very popular with the people at work. He's such a nice dog and such a joy to have around. He's my prince. :)
