!!WARNING!! Anyone who kennels their pets her on Oahu, please DO NOT use 'AFFORDABLE PET BOARDING'.

A friend of mine who was taking care of Kai for me while I was on vacation back on the mainland; had to leave for a personal emergency to the mainland herself. At the last minute I scurried calling every kennel from the mainland, I found Affordable Pet Boarding and after speaking extensively with the lady she assured me Kai would be well taken care of. So I went ahead and had my friend drop him off there, where he stood for 4 days. Please understand Kai is a very socialized dog and this was not his first time at a kennel. That being said.....

I went to pick him up the morning of 3 January 2010, upon my arrival there was a smell in the air of filth, imagine if you haven't cleaned up the poopy in your yard for days...that was the smell in the air when I drove up not yet exiting the vehicle. When I finally did get out of the vehicle I realized Kai's bedding was hanging over a fence outside, and as she brought Kai out I realized he was extremely FILTHY and STINCKY! He had cuts all over his nose, to which they said were probably from the fence. He smelled as though the dogs who were jumping on him had stepped in pee or poo and the residual was on him. I've lived in a home with a huge back yard and I take Kai to dog parks all the time and never has he been so filthy and smelly, even if I don't give him a bath for a few weeks. The lady said when they ran out of his food (Science Diet) they gave him Iams, to which they said he started having diarhea. She said they gave him Pepto Bismol when they noticed his diarhea. She didn't call me to notify me of this change nor did she get authorization to treat him with such a drug. So then she said they started feeding him rice and chicken (pure with nothing added).

After I brought Kai home I gave him a bath immediately, I had to wash him three times literally to get him clean, his diahrea was like nothing I've ever seen from him. It was black and completely watery. His eating habits had changed, he didn't quite eat like he did before I left. About a week later I noticed his fur was, dry and patchy looking, his fur was literally falling off. I could pull a hand full of fur off, it was horrible!!

Upon each problem I called and took Kai to the vet for treatment. There are a couple of more issues that I am unable to disclose at this point. I'm writing this to see if anyone else has had any of the same/bad experiances with this particular kennel and if so please email me, I need help for which I cannot go into to detail with right now.

Mahalo,

Emma

A bland Chicken and Rice can work sometimes. It depends upon what is causing the intestinal problems. There are other drugs that can be prescribed depending upon the cause. In either case, diarrhea and vomiting are always a concern for either cats or dogs. If either occurs, it is wise to get the pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

While I agree that there may be problems at "Affordable Pet Boarding", I have to point out that Pepto Bismol (or it's generic form) is routinely prescribed for dogs. See this: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=0+1303+1459&aid=1456

It should *NOT* be given to cats.

THAT IS CRAZY!!! i will make sure we will not go there, giving a dog pepto bismol is crazy. what were they thinking???? Thanks for letting us know. it must have been hard for you to see your dog that way.You should report them for that. all of these peole may trust them and then more dogs will have to go through that.

Affordable Pet Boarding seems like they're in it only for the money. You should make a complaint to the ASPCA or the Hawaiian Humane Society. They can take an unexpected visit to the business and investigate to see if they are treating the animals in a humane way, just on your complaint. Sounds like your dog was kept in a small crate or kennel, but that is only my opinion. I know that your dog will recoup, but will be weary the next time you leave him. http://www.puppies-2-dogs.com
